Triumph of Civic Virtue?

March 6, 2011

I’m finding all of the controversy over this statue amusing and sad at the same time. First, when the statue was stationed outside of City Hall, Mayor LaGuardia was sick of the statue “mooning” him everyday so he had it banished to Queens. And this is where is has stood crumbling since 1941.

Called Triumph of Civic Virtue, this statue is over 100 years old, and is the last piece completed by the American sculptor Frederick MacMonnies. In addition to our past mayor’s eloquent take on the sculpture, it has also been upsetting women for almost a century because it is said that the man is conquering two women.

OMG people, clearly, they are sirens. I know it’s hard to tell with the current form of the statue. But seriously, the man is conquering vice and corruption. Has no one taken an art history class?

Anyways, Greenwood Cemetery is offering to take the statue in and cover the restoration. What do you think? Can Brooklyn show it more love than our sister borough? I would say so especially after Rep. Anthony Weiner said he wanted to sell it on Craigslist. I think it would be an interesting addition for all those who like to explore the cemetery.
