Things to do on Saturday

June 16, 2011 , ,

Yet another week of summer is passing us by with too much to do and too little time. Here are a few great events for the upcoming Saturday. This should be enough to wear you out for Sunday. In addition to these don’t forget the ongoing Smorgasburg every Saturday in Williamsburg as well as the Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene.

The Total Smith Street Immersion
Brooklyn Based Block Party! Brooklyn Brewery sponsors this so you will be able to sample lots of great beers like the new “The Concoction” at Great Bar Harry, which is brewed with peated malt, lemon, ginger and honey! You will also get discounts to local shops, bars and restaurants. And don’t miss the brand new stage at the Micro Museum, which will have solo acts and readings.

To take part of this you’ll need to pick up a free immersion card at one of two participating shops: By Brooklyn (261 Smith St.) or Brooklyn Tattoo/Urban Folk Art Gallery (99 Smith St.) starting at noon on June 18. For more info check out Brooklyn Based.

Mermaid Parade – Coney Island
This is my first year going and I’m super excited to be going with J and G. I always manage to miss it because I’m out of town! The Mermaid parade was started in 1983 and remains to be one of the nations largest art parade. It was started to pay homage to Coney Island’s forgotten Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954. Good lord you learn something new every day. I’m looking forward to drinking beer and see people dressed like sea creatures.

Edible Manhattan – Festival of 7 Ingredients.
201 Mulberry St. This is an annual tasting event that kicks off Eat Drink Local Week. All participants will be serving dishes with at least one of the seven selected ingredients. Those ingredients are: Strawberries, Peas, Green Garlic, Chives, Rhubarb, Lamb, Oysters and Yogurt. Tickets are $25 and you can buy them here.

Enjoy!
